How Coastal Salt Air Affects Glass Railing Hardware

The glass itself is unaffected by salt air — it's chemically inert. The hardware holding it isn't. Airborne salt particulate settles continuously on any outdoor metal surface near the coastline, and standard 304 stainless steel is vulnerable to the specific corrosion mechanism that chloride exposure causes: pitting.

The visible sign starts as a dull brownish discoloration sometimes called "tea staining," typically appearing within one to three years on 304 hardware installed close to the coastline. Left unaddressed, that staining can progress to actual pitting — small corrosion craters that act as stress points in load-bearing hardware, which is where a cosmetic issue becomes a structural one.

Grade 316 stainless steel adds molybdenum to the alloy, which meaningfully improves resistance to exactly this chloride-driven corrosion. It costs roughly 10-20% more on the hardware line than 304, and for any property within a mile or two of the San Diego coastline, that premium is one of the cheapest insurance policies in the entire project — the alternative is replacing corroded hardware years earlier than it should need replacing.

Regular fresh-water rinsing helps regardless of grade, but it doesn't substitute for correct material selection at a high-exposure site.
